Thermostat Not Working: Blank Screen, Won't Change Temp, or Not Turning On AC
Your thermostat is blank, unresponsive, or the HVAC system isn't responding to setpoint changes.
Likely causes
| Cause | Likelihood | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Dead batteries | 40% | $5 |
| Tripped furnace door switch / breaker | 20% | Free |
| Blown transformer / 24V fuse | 15% | $140 – $280 |
| Loose wiring at thermostat or air handler | 10% | $120 – $220 |
| Thermostat itself failed | 10% | $180 – $420 (with smart thermostat install) |
| Wi-Fi lost (smart thermostats) | 5% | Free |
Safe DIY checks (do these first)
- 1
Replace the batteries
Most residential thermostats use 2 AA batteries. Even hardwired thermostats often have backup batteries.
- 2
Check the furnace door
If the furnace access panel isn't fully closed, a safety switch cuts 24V power to the thermostat and the display goes blank.
- 3
Check the breaker panel
Look for a tripped FURNACE or AIR HANDLER breaker. Reset once.
- 4
Look for the 24V fuse
Inside the air handler control board there's a small 3-amp automotive-style fuse. If it's blown, the thermostat has no power.
- 5
For smart thermostats, re-check Wi-Fi
Ecobee and Nest can lose Wi-Fi connection during router changes. Re-run setup in the app.
When to stop and call a pro
- • Fuse blows repeatedly after replacement
- • Thermostat wiring looks burned or corroded
- • You're upgrading to a smart thermostat and don't have a C-wire
- • System doesn't respond even with wires jumped at the thermostat
Typical repair cost
$140 – $420. Smart thermostat installs with C-wire adapter typically $280 – $520.
Frequently asked questions
My thermostat is not working — what do I check first?
Batteries, then the furnace access panel (an open blower door cuts 24V power and blanks the display), then the furnace breaker, then the 3-amp fuse on the control board. Those four account for roughly 80% of the thermostat-not-working calls we run in the Antelope Valley, and three of them cost nothing to fix.
Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Yes for continuous power. Most 2010+ HVAC systems have one. If not, we install a $40 add-a-wire kit at the air handler.
Why did my thermostat suddenly stop working?
80% of the time it's dead batteries or a tripped furnace door safety. Check those first.
Can a bad thermostat damage my AC?
Rare but possible — a stuck relay can short-cycle the compressor. If the AC turns on and off every 30 seconds, unplug the thermostat and call.
