Question 1

Is upgrading from SEER 14 to SEER 20 worth it?

Accepted Answer

In Southern California, upgrading from SEER 14 to SEER 20 saves $300–$650 per year on cooling costs at current SCE rates ($0.28/kWh). Payback is typically 6–9 years on the upgrade premium of $2,000–$3,500. Worth it if you plan to stay 7+ years and run AC heavily.

Question 2

What SEER2 rating is best for Southern California?

Accepted Answer

For most Southern California homes, 15.2–16 SEER2 is the cost-effective sweet spot — it meets the federal minimum, qualifies for utility rebates, and has the fastest payback. Choose 17+ SEER2 in high-desert areas (Lancaster, Palmdale, Bakersfield) where AC runs 5+ months a year.

Question 3

How much does a SEER 20 AC cost vs SEER 14?

Accepted Answer

A SEER 20 (variable-speed) system typically costs $2,500–$4,000 more than a comparable SEER 14.3 system. Use the ROI calculator at dcairandheating.com/seer-comparison to see your specific payback.

Question 4

What's the difference between SEER and SEER2?

Accepted Answer

SEER2 is the new federal efficiency rating effective January 2023. SEER2 testing uses higher external static pressure to better reflect real-world ductwork, so a SEER2 number is roughly 4.5% lower than the old SEER for the same equipment. A 15 SEER2 unit is approximately equivalent to a 15.7 SEER under the old standard.

Question 5

Will a higher SEER lower my electric bill?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Going from a 10 SEER (typical 2005-era) to a 16 SEER2 system cuts cooling kWh by roughly 38%. For a Bakersfield home with $1,800/year in cooling costs, that's about $685 saved per year.

Question 6

Do utility companies offer SEER upgrade rebates?

Accepted Answer

Yes. SCE, SoCalGas, and LADWP offer rebates of $200–$1,500 for qualifying high-efficiency AC and heat pump installations. DC Air and Heating handles the paperwork — see dcairandheating.com/tax-credits for current programs.
